Grayshott Folk Club presents: “Songman” BOB FOX + Jon Wilks
March 30 @ 19:30 - 23:00£14.00
Monday 30th March 2020 @ 7.30pm
To try and sum up Bob Fox’s Folk music career in just a few sentences would be impossible. Bob comes from the North-East, indeed in many ways, he is the North-East and he is Folk music personified.
In 1970, he started out in local Folk clubs as a floor singer/guitarist, then as a real troubadour has done the rounds of virtually every Folk Club in the UK and hundreds much further afield, including many in Australasia and North America.
Over the years, Bob has had highly successful musical collaborations with Tom McConville, Stu Luckley (together, they won the BBC Radio 2 Folk Album of the Year Award in 1978) and with Billy Mitchell (ex-Lindisfarne). As a solo performer Bob was nominated for the Best Folk Singer Award in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in both 2003 and 2004. He was heavily involved in the 2006 re-make of BBC Radio 2’s “Radio Ballads” and then “The Pitmen Poets” projects with Jez Lowe, Benny Graham and Billy Mitchell.
In 2011, Bob’s life changed completely when Musical Director John Tams, asked Bob if he would take the part of “Songman” in The National Theatre’s West End production of “WarHorse”. He played that part for two years and toured the UK, Ireland and South Africa with it. He also reprised the role in the 10th Anniversary tour of that production between June 2018 and April 2019.
Through his masterful interpretation of traditional and contemporary songs, he’s become a real favourite on the national and international Folk circuit. Bob is literally a living legend in the Folk World and we look forward to welcoming him for his first visit to Grayshott Folk Club.
+ Jon Wilks- We had Jon playing for us at Grayshott back in October 2019 and he was great! We are chuffed he has agreed to come back to play/sing for us again. He’s easily our favourite Brummie Folk singer.
