The Merry Widow – Postponed
November 11 - November 14
For their next production, Guildford Opera are going to 1990’s Paris for a summer ball in the garden of the rich Pontevedrienne, Hanna Glawari.
All is well for the guests, apart from the Ambassador who has a large problem to fix. All his country’s wealth is held by the glamorous ‘Merry Widow’ and if she remarries a foreigner, Pontevedro will be bankrupt! Can her numerous French suitors be supplanted by the Ambassador’s First Secretary? But he’s always at his favourite nightclub getting drunk with the chorus girls …
This is pure French farce. Amorous and political intrigue are swept along on Lehar’s sparkling music, one familiar tune after another – ‘Vilja’, ‘Women, Women’, the ‘Grisettes’ chorus’ – with the accent firmly on FUN!
We’re singing in English with a chamber orchestra to accompany us.
If you want to find out more about the music and story, there’s a pre-show talk by the directors at 6.30 pm before the Friday performance.
